A Guide to Directory Submission
This tutorial explores the process of directory submission. Directory submission is a great SEO technique that can help generate traffic to your site, gaining quality backlinks and higher positions in the SERPs however as with most SEO techniques if you don’t do it right you will be wasting your time or get your site rejected from the directories.
Directory submission is a an important part of your overall link building campaign. There are many free directories which you can submit to, even niche directories and paid submission directories.
Finding Directories
Factors to Consider
There are some points that you should consider when submitting to directories:-
- Do you want to pay for directory submission?
- Do you want to have reciprocal links?
If you have decided that you would gain from adding to paid directories and have a budget then please read Paid Directory Submission below
Some directories will only allow you to submit if you are willing to give a reciprocal link back to them, if you feel this is something that you want to do then there will be more directories open to you.
Paid Directory Submission
If you have decided that you want to include paid listings for your directory submission setting yourself a budget should be your first priority. Knowing your budget enables you to research which paid directories you would benefit from the most. After you have drawn up a list inline with your budget you are ready to start submitting. Please see Submitting to Directories.
Niche Directories
Most websites will fit a niche and if you are lucky a few niches, decide which niche your website falls into. Submitting your site to a niche directory will get you a link from your related niche surrounded by relevant content. A good resource can be found here Directory Critic - Niche Directories. Please see submitting to Directories below.
Free Directory Listing
Directory listings which are free are a great way to generate links to your website. Finding free directories with a high page rank will give you quality links to your site.
Submitting to Directories
You are now ready to submit to the directories, this requires you to fill in an online form giving some information about your website including your link. It is a good idea when describing your site to include a good description including any keywords that you think would be appropriate to fully describe your website and what you are promoting. Most of the directories allow you to suggest the appropriate subject/area for your site and its listing to appear – choose wisely.
If you are submitting to a directory with a reciprocal link policy then if you do not already have an area for links now is the time to create one. Most reciprocal links will need to be within a click of the first page but always check to make sure. Some directories will have guidelines to help you through the online form process which you should adhere to as this could result in your listing not being published in the directory.
I recommend that you prepare the submission data before you start, it will save you a lot of time and spelling mistakes later on.
Prepare a few variations on all of the following fields, not all directories use all the fields but if you have them ready the process will be quicker.
Title
A 3-5 word description of your site, it usually has to contain the site name. This will usually act as the websites anchor text so choose it carefully. Be sure to make plenty of variations so you don’t trigger an over optimisation filter by getting loads of links come in with the same anchor.
Example: "Johnny’s Red Widget Shop"
Description
Description field limits vary between 250 characters and 500 characters, write a couple of descriptions at different lengths and use the most relevant on each time. Remember to include your keywords and give visitors a good idea of what your site is about.
Example: "If you are looking to buy red widgets in the UK then Johnny widget shop is the place for you. We stock red widgets, blue widgets and green widgets and offer free delivery on widgets in the UK. Buy widgets now it’s safe and secure."
Keywords/Tags
This field just requires a list of keywords that related to your site, make sure you vary them and separate with the right character (usually commas).
Example: red widgets,widgets uk,online widgets,blue widgets,buy widgets
Meta Description
A shorter version of your original description, just like the meta on your site. Keep below 250 characters.
It is always a good idea to keep a list of the directories which you have submitted your site, whether it was paid, reciprocal etc. Some directories can take up to 6 months to review your site and accept your link however when your submission is approved it is a great way to increase your websites exposure and bring traffic.
Important do not submit to the same directory again and again, as said above some of the directories can take up to 6 months to add your listing. Be patient.
Rejected Listing
If your listing is rejected try to find out the reason why, it could be something simple that was in their guidelines or they may indicate a reason why. If you can correct the issue and resubmit.
That’s pretty much it for directory submission. Just remember to be patient with your acceptance to your submission.
